MA Project
Central Saint Martins College of
Art and Design
The aim of the project was to design a signage system for a cultural site
in Bulgaria. The city is the second Bulgarian capital, Great Preslav,
of the first Bulgarian kingdom in the Ninth century. This city was the
cultural center where the writings of the medieval Slavs spread to many
other parts of Eastern Europe and in parts of Asia. Nowadays, Great Preslav
is a cultural park with museums preserving the history and the treasures
of the medieval Bulgarians. In response to the site, a signage system
was developed specifically for the area in consideration of the history
of the Glagolithic alphabet (which were used by the Slavonic people, and
later replaced by the Cyrillic alphabet). The Glagolithic alphabet was
based on a grid created from a cross, a triangle and a circle that represents
hope, faith and love from the Orthodox Church. This grid and the characteristics
of the Glagolithic alphabet were used for the creation of the pictograms
and the signs themselves. The intention of the entire system is to represent
the identity of a culture that was heavily influential in shaping the
history of the early Bulgarian society.
